WHO Recommends Limiting Childrens Cell Phone Use
For Vitalchild.com by Kevin Hill Date: 11/10/09
After an investigation that lasted a decade and included studies of 12,800 people in 13 countries, the head of the World Health Organization study, Dr.
Elisabeth Cardis, recommended the use of mobile phones by children should be restricted.
The
study lasted from 2000 to 2004. Six of eight of the studies on the most
common type of brain tumors called glioma, had a link to heavy use of
mobile phones. One of the studies found a 39 percent increased risk.
Children
should limit the use of cell phone because their skull is thinner and
less able to protect the brain from radiation according to research.
The
doctor said that she recognized the importance of cell phone use as an
important tool in emergencies and maintaining contact between parents
and children so she did not recommend a complete ban
Dr.
Cardis said that many of the studies have shown negative effects of the
radio frequency radiation emitted by mobile phones in studies that were
limited and not conclusive. She recommends that it is important to take
precautions except for essential calls involving children.
Interestingly,
children were not included in the study and the study was partly funded
by the mobile phone industry so critics feel that the results could be
underplayed because of it.
The
30 million dollar investigation will be delayed because of
disagreements over how the information will be presented. The final
study will be presented in the coming months.
Alternative
ways of using cell phones? Texting instead of talking and avoiding
cell phone use when the signal is weak. Radiation is strongest at these
times.
